Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) are set to adopt the post-2020 global biodiversity framework at CBD COP 15.2 in Montreal in December 2022. Throughout the negotiations of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, many Parties have noted the need for national level capacity-building, and technical and scientific cooperation to enhance the generation, monitoring, reporting and assessment of data, information and knowledge to support its implementation. Many Parties have also been recognized that enhanced transparency on the implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework will be critical for its success.
UNEP-WCMC, in collaboration with a range of partners, is facilitating consultations to determine the needs and opportunities for global knowledge support services for biodiversity, to support implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. The overall aim of this proposed initiative is to build on and interconnect existing tools, technologies and networks in an inclusive manner, to support national efforts for the implementation, monitoring, reporting and review of progress towards the agreed goals and targets of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.
A first assessment and options for global knowledge support services for biodiversity will be presented in a dedicated side event at COP15.2 in Montreal on 7 December 2022.
